The Curriculum
The aims of Curriculum for Excellence are that every child and young person should know they are valued and will be supported to become a successful learner, an effective contributor, a confident individual and a responsible citizen.
Every child and young person should:
The curriculum includes the totality of experiences which are planned for children and young people through their education. It includes the formal and informal curriculum.
The starting point for learning is a positive ethos and climate of respect and trust based upon shared values across the Eastmuir School community.
Eastmuir School aim to provide a coherent, flexible and enriched curriculum for all our pupils.
The Curriculum Organisers
The curriculum areas are the organisers for setting out the experiences and outcomes. Each area contributes to the four capacities- successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens.
Experiences and outcomes
The experiences and outcomes describe the expectations for learning and progression in all areas of the curriculum.
The title ‘experiences and outcomes’ recognises the importance of the quality and nature of the learning experience in developing attributes and capabilities and in achieving active engagement, motivation and depth of learning. An outcome represents what is to be achieved.
They describe learning which has a clear purpose in the acquiring of knowledge and the establishment of understanding. They also support the development of skills and attributes.
Some children 's learning will be based upon the Curriculum for Excellence's Experiences and Outcomes but will be working towards the Foundation Milestones for learners who have complex learning needs. These form the foundations of learning and focus on early communication; making connections; self and emotions; and functional movement.
Eastmuir School recognises how the curriculum should include space for learning beyond subject boundaries. Cross curricular topics are used throughout the school to cover the sciences and social studies experiences and outcomes alongside experiences and outcomes in other areas.
Important themes such as enterprise, citizenship, sustainable development, international education and creativity are developed in a range of contexts including special MISSIONS from the Champions of Change.
Opportunities for personal achievement
Pupils need opportunities for achievements both in the classroom and beyond, giving them a sense of satisfaction and building motivation, resilience and confidence.
Curriculum for Excellence will support all children and young people in developing skills which they will use throughout their life and in their work.
The Health and wellbeing experiences and outcomes include a range of opportunities to develop skills for life and skills for work. These experiences and outcomes also include opportunities to develop a range of skills and attributes that will enable children and young people to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle. Eastmuir is committed to providing at least two hours of taught physical activity per week.
Personalisation and choice
The curriculum should respond to individual needs and support particular aptitudes and talents. It should give each child and young person increasing opportunities for exercising responsible personal choice as they move through their school career.
